US troops visit Belarus to monitor Zapad military drills

American service members have arrived at a Belarusian training ground to observe the joint Belarus-Russia exercises Zapad-2025, according to the Belarusian Ministry of Defense and Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Center for Countering Disinformation.
The Belarusian ministry released a video showing American troops shaking hands with Belarusian Defense Minister Viktor Khrenin. The US soldiers thanked the official for the invitation.
Khrenin reportedly instructed that the American guests be shown everything they were interested in.
The Belarusian Ministry of Defense noted that representatives from 23 countries, including Türkiye, the US, and Hungary - all NATO members - are observing the exercises.
Military-diplomatic representatives from Azerbaijan, Vietnam, Iran, Kazakhstan, China, Cuba, Russia, Serbia, the US, Sudan, Turkmenistan, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Peru, and Indonesia were also present at the training ground.
The presence of US military personnel at the site of Russian and Belarusian exercises was confirmed by Kovalenko.
Zapad exercises
Belarus is hosting the joint Zapad military drills with Russia from September 12 to 16.
These exercises have raised concerns among European countries, heightened by a recent Russian drone attack on Poland.
According to Andriy Demchenko, State Border Guard Service of Ukraine spokesperson, border guards have not observed any unusual activity near the Ukrainian border during the exercises.
