US to make efforts to prevent war between Israel and Hezbollah - Reuters
Washington is making every effort to prevent a full-scale war between Israel and the Iranian-backed Lebanese movement Hezbollah, reports Reuters.
According to reports, the US is leading a diplomatic effort to dissuade Israel from striking the Lebanese capital, Beirut, or major civilian infrastructure in response to Hezbollah's deadly rocket attack on the Golan Heights on July 27, which resulted in the deaths of 12 young people.
The goal of this diplomacy is to restrain Israel's reaction by urging it not to target densely populated Beirut or the southern suburbs of the city, which are Hezbollah's stronghold. The US is also working to ensure that key infrastructure such as airports and bridges are not hit. This information was provided on condition of anonymity by five individuals, including Lebanese and Iranian officials, as well as diplomats from Middle Eastern and European countries.
Israeli officials stated that their country aims to harm Hezbollah but does not want to drag the region into a full-scale war. Two Middle Eastern and European diplomats said that Israel has made no commitments to avoid strikes on Beirut, its suburbs, or civilian infrastructure.
What happened
On the evening of July 27, Israel reported a Hezbollah strike on a stadium in the Majdal Shams area of the Golan Heights. The attack killed 12 people, including children, and injured more than 30 others.
Later, the Israeli Foreign Ministry stated that this Hezbollah attack crossed all red lines. At the same time, Hezbollah denied responsibility for the strike on the stadium.
Earlier, it was reported that the US is concerned that the strike on the Golan Heights could lead to a war between Israel and Hezbollah.
