US states that Ukraine needs military mobilization more than new weapons
Ukraine has already received a large amount of various American weapons but still finds itself in a difficult situation on the battlefield. The reason for this lies in mobilization issues, states US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan during his interview with PBS News.
Specifically, Sullivan was asked what the US could have done earlier to help Ukraine achieve a faster victory. In response, he reminded that Ukraine has received tanks from the US, as well as approval for the transfer of F-16 fighter jets, HIMARS systems, and Patriot systems.
"Ukraine finds itself in a more challenged position on the battlefield, suggesting that there's not a straight line between those weapons systems and how it does on the battlefield," he said.
According to him, the most direct link between Ukraine's achievements and contributions lies in mobilization and human resources. At the same time, he does not believe that earlier approval for any particular weapons system would have significantly impacted the battlefield.
"Have we seen a marked difference since we have provided tanks to Ukraine in terms of the battlefield? Similarly, on F-16s, have we seen a marked difference? Our view has been that there's not one weapon system that makes a difference in this battle. It's about manpower, and Ukraine needs to do more, in our view, to firm up its lines in terms of the number of forces it has on the front lines," Sullivan stated.
Mobilization in Ukraine
Earlier, we reported that this spring Ukraine lowered the conscription age from 27 to 25. Thus, men aged 25 and older can now be called to serve in the war.
Additionally, we reported that US officials are trying to persuade Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to approve mobilization starting at age 18. However, he remains firm in his stance.
