Attacks on peaceful Ukrainian cities at Christmas serve as a reminder that Russian President Vladimir Putin is a ruthless killer. He is not interested in peace, according to a joint statement by US senators released by the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.
The senators emphasized that they condemn Russia’s brutal attacks on Kherson, Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Sumy, the Donetsk region, and Kryvyi Rih, carried out against innocent Ukrainians who had gathered to celebrate Christmas with their loved ones and in prayer.
They noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had agreed to a Christmas truce, but Russian President Vladimir Putin refused to cease fire. Instead, the Kremlin leader ordered his soldiers to continue committing brutal acts of aggression on one of Christianity’s holiest days.
"Even for countries at war, there is a long history of Christmas ceasefires, including notably during World War I. Today’s decision by Putin to launch attacks rather than hold fire is a sobering reminder for us all: Putin is a ruthless murderer who has no interest in peace and cannot be trusted," the senators added.
They also expressed solidarity with Ukrainians celebrating Christmas under the most difficult conditions.
"Ukrainians’ faith is a stronger force than the evil unleashed today by the Kremlin," the senators added.
Attacks on Ukraine
Russian forces attacked peaceful Ukrainian cities both on Christmas Eve and on Christmas.
In particular, today, December 25, Russian forces struck a multi-storey residential building in Chernihiv. As a result of the attack, an 80-year-old woman was killed. Ten more people, including children, were injured.
In addition, yesterday, December 24, the Russian army struck Kharkiv and its suburbs. One person was killed as a result of the attacks.
