US senators have introduced a bill to confiscate Russia’s frozen assets. The funds can be potentially directed toward helping Ukrainian children who were abducted by Russia, according to the Deputy Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Olena Kondratiuk.

According to her, the bill was drafted by Senators Amy Klobuchar (Democrat) and Chuck Grassley (Republican). The legislation proposes to:

– assist Ukraine in investigating the abduction of children, identifying them, collecting information (including open-source intelligence), and holding those responsible accountable;
– provide abducted Ukrainian children with medical and psychological rehabilitation, family support, reintegration services, legal aid, housing, and educational resources;
– align sanctions lists with those of the United Kingdom and the European Union to more effectively bring to justice individuals involved in the abduction of Ukrainian children;
– authorize the US President to use any Russian sovereign assets located in the United States for the purposes outlined in this law.

Confiscation of Russian assets

CBS News previously reported, citing its own sources, that US President Donald Trump may confiscate around $5 billion in frozen Russian assets.

The outlet also noted that the American leader could allocate new funding to support Ukraine in its war against Russia.
