US Senate approves 'bone-crushing' sanctions against Russia

The US Senate has approved a bill on "bone-crushing" sanctions against Russia and Iran, Reuters reports.
A vast majority of the US Senate supported a sweeping sanctions bill against Russia, paving the way for its consideration by the House of Representatives as early as next month.
The vote count showed 68 senators voted in favor and 9 against the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctions Act Against Russia and Iran of 2026.
The bill is now being sent to the House of Representatives.
What is known about the 'bone-crushing' sanctions
The US could introduce a new package of tough sanctions against Russia as early as September 2026. Ukrainian officials believe the restrictions being prepared in Washington could be significantly harsher than the current European Union sanctions.
The bill was authored by the late US Senator Lindsey Graham. Kyiv expects the US Congress to consider and approve the legislation in early autumn.
Possible restrictions
According to Ukraine, the adoption of this package could become a catalyst for further strengthening international sanctions pressure on Russia. Kyiv believes Washington's decision could encourage allies to introduce additional restrictive measures.
Possible steps by partners include:
- Adoption of the European Union's 22nd sanctions package;
- Expansion of sanctions policies by the Group of Seven (G7) countries;
- Introduction of additional restrictions by other states supporting Ukraine.
Thus, Kyiv expects the US initiative to help increase international economic pressure on Russia in the coming months.
Earlier, after an escalation in Russian attacks against Ukraine, the European Union expanded its sanctions list, adding five more individuals.
They were added to the list due to their involvement in Russia's actions against the Ukrainian population and critical infrastructure.
