EU sanctions directors of missile factories behind attacks on Ukraine

The European Union has added five individuals to its Russia sanctions list in response to Moscow's intensified strikes deliberately targeting Ukraine's civilians and critical infrastructure, Politico reports.
Who was sanctioned
Among those newly sanctioned is Ramil Badgutdinov, the head of a company involved in the production of Iskander-M ballistic missiles.
The EU also sanctioned Aleksandr Dyukarev, the director of the KrasMash plant, which manufactures Sarmat ballistic missiles.
Russia has not used the Sarmat missile against Ukraine, but Moscow continues to conduct tests of the system.
The remaining individuals are directors of Russian defense companies involved in communications systems, as well as software development for drones and military space technologies.
Why the EU imposed the sanctions
According to Politico, the EU's press release does not refer to a specific attack. However, earlier this week Russia carried out one of the deadliest strikes on the Ukrainian capital, killing 17 people.
A similar Russian attack on Kyiv in July claimed the lives of 12 people.
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas commented on the new sanctions.
"With its army stalled on the battlefield, Moscow is further escalating its campaign of terror against civilians. The EU must continue to intensify pressure on Russia until Moscow ends its war," she wrote on X.
This is not the first time the EU has imposed targeted sanctions in response to Russian attacks on Kyiv.
In July, the bloc introduced sanctions against those linked to the large-scale strikes on the capital. At that time, it blacklisted companies belonging to the ABS Electro group, which manufactures electronic components for Russia's Shahed and Geran drones.
