Oil sanctions imposed by the US against Russia are in effect again after exemptions that Washington introduced for several months due to the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, states the Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for Sanctions Policy, Vladyslav Vlasyuk.

"US oil sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil remain in force," Vlasyuk noted.

Sanctions against Russia were suspended

On March 12, amid the war with Iran and the blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, the US introduced temporary exemptions for Russian oil in order to stabilize global prices.

At that time, oil prices surged sharply as Middle Eastern countries were unable to export their oil through the Strait of Hormuz, which was blocked by Iran.

From the outset, the move was seen as temporary. However, the exemptions were extended several times.

Officially, the sanctions were supposed to return on June 17, but there were no official announcements from the White House about this. At the same time, Donald Trump said he was "considering" the issue.

On June 25, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that Donald Trump would make a final decision on extending the exemptions based on price dynamics in the global energy market.

According to S&P Global, from March 12 to June 17, Russia was able to earn an additional over $2 billion.
