The US has allegedly not set any "deadlines" for ending Russia’s war against Ukraine. Washington wants the fighting to stop as soon as possible, states US Ambassador to NATO Matthew Whitaker, according to The Guardian.

Whitaker recalled that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously spoken about US plans to end the war by the end of June.

"I don’t think that is anything that the United States has put out there… We want the fighting to end. We want both sides to come together and agree to a peace deal. We’d like it sooner rather than later, and … we just want … to see the suffering and the killing end in Ukraine," he said.

According to the US diplomat, deadlines in such a situation are usually "very dangerous."

"We want a peace deal done. I think we’ll just get this done as soon as it’s ready to get done. But ultimately, both sides, the Russians and the Ukrainians, are going to have to agree to any deal that’s hammered out," Whitaker noted.

What Zelenskyy said

Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that the US is proposing that the sides end the war by early summer 2026 and may apply corresponding diplomatic pressure in line with this timeline.

According to the head of state, the American side is focusing on June and is working to establish a clear negotiation schedule, which may be driven by domestic political factors in the United States.
