US responds to Israeli strike on Beirut
The White House has confirmed its commitment to Israel's security following an Israeli military strike on Beirut. According to Israel, the strike resulted in the death of a high-ranking Hezbollah commander, Fuad Shukr, informs the Times of Israel.
"Our commitment to Israel’s security is ironclad and unwavering against all Iran-backed threats, including Lebanese Hezbollah," said Adrienne Watson, a spokesperson for the US National Security Council.
She said that the rocket attack, which killed 12 Israelis in Majdal Shams on Saturday, was "horrific."
"Israel has a right to defend itself against the severe threats it faces," Watson stated.
"At the same time, the United States is continuing to work on a diplomatic solution to end these terrible attacks and allow citizens on both sides to safely return to their homes," she added.
Unnamed Israeli and American officials commented to the media that Israel had notified the US in advance about the strike on Beirut.
It is worth noting that the escalation between Israel and Lebanon occurred last Saturday when Hezbollah, according to Israel, attacked the city of Majdal Shams, located in the Golan Heights. A rocket hit a soccer field, killing more than 10 people and injuring over 30.
On July 30, the IDF conducted an airstrike on Beirut, the capital of Lebanon. Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant issued a statement saying that Hezbollah had "crossed a red line."
The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that the strike resulted in the deaths of a woman and two children, with an additional 68 people injured. The Israeli Army announced the elimination of Hezbollah's top commander, Fuad Shukr.
