The US military carried out airstrikes on the positions of militants in Syria. As a result of the operation, two members of the jihadist terrorist group Islamic State (ISIS) were eliminated, according to the US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The US military reported that on December 23, a precision airstrike was carried out in Syria's Dayr az Zawr Province.

It was stated that this operation resulted in the death of two ISIS militants and the injury of one more.

"The terrorists were moving a truckload of weapons which were destroyed during the strike. This strike occurred in an area formerly controlled by the Syrian regime and Russians," said CENTCOM in a statement.

The American side also emphasized that this airstrike is part of CENTCOM's ongoing commitment, along with regional partners, to disrupt terrorist efforts to plan, organize, and carry out attacks against civilians and military personnel from the US, our allies, and partners across the region and beyond.

US counterterrorism operations in Syria

Washington has stated that the US mission in Syria, along with its coalition partners, aims to deliver a final defeat to militants from various terrorist groups, including the jihadists of the Islamic State.

The American side emphasizes that as part of a comprehensive strategy to defeat ISIS, US forces are working with local partners and through them to conduct operations against ISIS forces in Iraq and Syria, as well as against Al-Qaeda in Syria, to limit the potential for the resurgence of these groups and mitigate threats to the US.

In a statement from December, US President Joe Biden confirmed that in November, he ordered strikes on targets in Syria following attacks on US assets. He also reminded that since October 7, 2001, US forces have been conducting counterterrorism operations in the Middle East, particularly against Al-Qaeda and its affiliated groups and organizations.

Recently, US Central Command (CENTCOM) reported that American forces had struck military equipment belonging to unidentified armed groups in eastern Syria. The attack was carried out in self-defense following an artillery attack on a US base in the country on December 3.

In the US, it was also noted that the events were not related to the offensive by anti-Assad rebels in Syria.

On December 20, the Pentagon announced that the US had increased its military presence in Syria and provided the reasons for this decision.

On the same day, the US confirmed the elimination of ISIS leader Abu Yusif in Syria during an airstrike on December 19.
