One year after US President Donald Trump's inauguration, three national polls showed a dramatic drop in his popularity, reports Axios.
According to Harvard CAPS/Harris data, for the first time during Trump’s second term, a majority of registered voters - 51%- said that Joe Biden was performing better as president. This is a sharp contrast to February 2025, when Trump held a confident 58% advantage on the same question.
A similar trend is confirmed by YouGov/Economist: only 37% of Americans currently approve of the incumbent president’s performance, one of the lowest ratings in his entire political career.
Why the “trust credit” has run out
Experts highlight three main reasons for Americans’ political hangover.
Border crisis and radical measures. Recent NBC News polls show that 49% of adults strongly disapprove of Trump’s tough immigration policies following tragic incidents in Minneapolis.
Economic disappointment. Although Trump promised a rapid end to inflation, his net economic approval rating is -18, 26 points lower than at the same stage of his first presidency.
Loss of youth support. Approval among voters aged 18–29 has collapsed to a catastrophic -42 points. Young Americans increasingly link declining living standards and rising housing costs to the policies of the current administration.
What’s next: the threat of a “Blue Wave”
For Republicans, these figures are a warning ahead of the midterm Congressional elections. Analysts say that if the trend continues, Democrats have a strong chance of a comeback, despite the huge financial advantage of the Republican electoral fund.
“Donald Trump's base with non-college voters is absolutely collapsing,” notes CNN analyst Harry Enten.
Trump recently stirred intrigue with a statement regarding Ukraine.
