US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said at a Pentagon briefing that American forces are ready to carry out another strike on Iran if Tehran refuses the terms of a potential deal, according to The Independent.
The Pentagon chief warned Iranian authorities to "choose wisely" during a press conference.
He said Iran has an opportunity to choose a path of development and stability, but if it refuses, it could face a blockade and strikes on its infrastructure, including the energy sector.
Pressure on Tehran
Hegseth stressed that the United States is seeking a constructive solution but is ready to act decisively in case of escalation.
He also noted that an alternative could be a "prosperous future" for the Iranian people if an agreement is reached.
China’s reaction and the Strait of Hormuz
Amid the US statements, China earlier called on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, emphasizing the importance of maritime security.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that free and safe navigation along this route must be guaranteed, as there is a shared interest in restoring normal maritime trade.
Escalation in the region
The situation is unfolding following reports of a US blockade of Iranian ports, which has heightened tensions and created risks for shipping in the region.
China, Iran’s largest trading partner and a key buyer of its oil, has been directly affected by the restrictions.
US political statements
Earlier, US President Donald Trump said Washington had paused the blockade for China, calling it an exception in trade policy amid the escalating situation.
Trump also said he had exchanged letters with Chinese President Xi Jinping regarding possible arms supplies to Iran.
At the same time, Trump announced the suspension of the US military operation against the Iranian regime.
