US ready to invite Ukraine to NATO - Le Monde
The United States no longer objects to Ukraine's invitation to NATO. The change in the US position may further influence Berlin's opinion, reports Le Monde.
The newspaper noted that US President Joe Biden discussed a plan for Ukraine's victory with the leaders of Germany, France, and the United Kingdom in Berlin on Friday.
As it turned out, the United States, which, together with Germany, had been blocking Ukraine's accession to NATO, now has no fundamental objection to a simple invitation to Kyiv to join the Alliance.
According to an anonymous European diplomat, if Democratic candidate Kamala Harris wins the US presidential election, it can be assumed that Joe Biden will start working on an invitation to Ukraine during the transition period.
Several anonymous Le Monde sources believe that a change in Washington's position could also change Berlin's opinion, which opposes Ukraine's accession to NATO.
Ukraine's accession to NATO
Ukraine's accession to NATO is one of the main goals of the country's foreign policy, which has been discussed more actively since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
This summer, a NATO summit was held in Washington, D.C., where Ukraine expected to receive an official invitation to join the Alliance, but this never happened.
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Ukraine's invitation to NATO and future membership would be real steps toward peace.
