US ramps up production of Patriot and THAAD air defense missiles

The Pentagon announced the signing of two key framework agreements with General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin to increase production of missiles for Patriot and THAAD, according to the Pentagon.
These agreements will launch seven-year multiyear procurement contracts aimed at increasing production volumes and accelerating delivery schedules for critical missile components for THAAD and PAC-3 MSE interceptors.
"Today's announcement represents an example of the evolution of how we partner with industry to expand the Arsenal of Freedom, outpace emerging threats," said Under Secretary of War for Acquisition and Sustainment Michael P. Duffey.
According to him, General Dynamics and Lockheed Martin answered the call. That is why government officials and air defense missile manufacturers are reducing bureaucracy and production timelines and rapidly scaling up domestic manufacturing capacity to provide advanced air and missile defense capabilities.
Key production goals under the new frameworks include:
- Tripling the production capacity of PAC-3 MSE interceptors.
- Quadrupling the production capacity of THAAD interceptors.
- Increasing production of key components, including motor cases, bodies and seeker sections, as well as motor deployment and guidance systems.
Russian troops have begun striking Kyiv with upgraded ballistic missiles under the name Iskander-1000. Due to its enlarged engine and increased launch vehicle, the missile is capable of hitting targets at a greater distance.
Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said there is a shortage of air defense missiles not only for Patriot systems, but also for ground-based and aviation platforms.
