On Friday, February 7, US lawmakers will introduce a bill titled the No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act. Politicians contend that the technology is linked to the Chinese Communist Party and poses a threat, reports The Hill.

"The technology race with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is not one the United States can afford to lose. DeepSeek’s generative AI program acquires the data of US users and stores the information for unidentified use by the CCP," said one of the project’s authors, Darin LaHood.

Lawmakers pointed to a security study published on February 5, which revealed that the DeepSeek website contains computer code capable of transmitting login data to China Mobile. This is a Chinese state-owned telecommunications company that is banned from operating in the US.

DeepSeek ban

Earlier, RBC-Ukraine reported that several countries have already imposed restrictions or bans on DeepSeek due to potential national security threats.

On February 1, Taiwan introduced a ban on the use of DeepSeek by government institutions and critical infrastructure service providers. The Ministry of Digital Affairs stated that DeepSeek’s operations are associated with security issues, such as cross-border data transfer and information leakage.

In Italy, the Chinese service was banned on January 30. The personal data protection authority requested information from Chinese companies providing the DeepSeek chatbot service, particularly regarding the purpose of data collection and whether the data is stored in China. The regulator was dissatisfied with the response, as the Chinese companies claimed that European legislation does not apply to them.
