Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the US is no longer a reliable partner. His remarks came after Trump announced tariffs on cars, according to The New York Times.

"It is clear that the United States is no longer a reliable partner,” stated Carney, adding that Canada is facing different relations with its neighbor.

Carney mentioned that his country will need to quickly shift towards more active trade with other nations.

Furthermore, Carney stated that Canada will impose additional corresponding tariffs on the US, but they won't be finalized until April 2 (the day US tariffs take effect). He explained that it is essential to first see what other trade measures US President Donald Trump announces before Canada reveals any countermeasures.

"We will be much more clear in a week, and then we will respond," said the Prime Minister.

Background

On Wednesday, March 26, Donald Trump announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on all cars imported into the United States. The tariff will take effect on April 2.

He expects that car manufacturers will relocate their production to the US and either build new plants or expand existing ones. At the same time, Trump stated that if a car is made in the US, the tariff will not apply.

In addition to Canada, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also reacted to the development. She stated that the European Union intends to take measures in response to protect all member states of the bloc.
