US helped narrow 'wide berth' between Russia and Ukraine, Witkoff says

In an interview with ABC News, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff said the US has, to some extent, managed to bring Russia and Ukraine closer together.
Trump's special envoy noted there is "a lot of hatred" between the two countries, which is why Ukraine and Russia hold firm positions. He said US President Donald Trump's task is "to narrow the wide berth between the parties." Witkoff believes progress has been made.
"The art, the elegance of it, and the president (Donald Trump -ed.) is the master at this... The art here is to narrow that, you know, wide berth between the parties," he said.
In the same interview, he expressed hope that tomorrow's conversation between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin will be successful. He added that this discussion will shape the future course of ending the war in Ukraine.
"I believe that the president (Donald Trump -ed.) is going to have a successful call with Vladimir Putin. They know each other. The president is determined to get something done here... So, I leave it to the two leaders to have that call," the special envoy said.
At the same time, Witkoff declined to answer whether Russia "is asking for too much" in the negotiations.
