US avoids shutdown despite Trump and Musk's resistance
On the morning of Saturday, December 21, the United States managed to avoid a shutdown, reports CNN. Congress voted in favor of a temporary budget plan, averting a government shutdown.
On Friday, House Speaker Mike Johnson introduced a temporary funding bill for discussion, but it did not include a debt ceiling suspension, which was called for by US President-elect Donald Trump.
The document was approved in the House of Representatives by 366 votes to 34, and the vote in the Senate after midnight ended 85 to 11.
According to CNN, the adopted bill provides for government funding until March 14, 2025, and includes about $100 billion for disaster relief, as well as an extension of the agricultural bill (it is about helping farmers).
President Joe Biden has signed a temporary US budget, avoiding a government shutdown. The relevant information is published on the White House website.
Donald Trump and future US Vice President J.D. Vance have recently launched a campaign against the temporary budget law. Elon Musk joined their position.
According to Politico, Musk actively turned Republicans against the bill through his social network X. In particular, he spread disinformation, claiming that the document provided for: a 40% increase in congressional salaries; funding for a new NFL stadium in Washington, D.C., at the expense of the federal budget; and funding for biological weapons laboratories. In reality, however, it was about other things and figures.
