US approves potential $2.7 billion arms package sale for Ukraine

The US State Department has approved a potential arms sale to Ukraine that includes the procurement and modernization of air defense systems, as well as related equipment and services.
According to the announcement, the estimated value of the deal is $2.68 billion. If it is finalized, Ukraine will finance the deal through a combination of European contributions and US Foreign Military Financing (FMF) funds allocated under the previous administration.
"The FMF will be counted as a US capital contribution to the Ukraine Reconstruction Investment Fund via a 1:1 reimbursement," the US State Department adds.
The Ukrainian government has submitted a request to purchase the following items, which do not fall under the category of major defense equipment:
- S-300 Clone missiles
- GAM-67 missiles
- Laser-guided air defense missile systems with extended range
- Improvised Transporter Erector Launcher (ITEL) 1.5
- Kits for modifying mobile launch systems
- RPS 202 radar stations for countering unmanned aerial vehicles
- Trailers with lifting masts, major upgrades, and maintenance
- Spare parts, consumables, and components, as well as equipment repair and return services
- Software and technical documentation
- Transportation services
- Engineering, technical, and logistical services provided by the US government and contractors
- Other related logistical and software support elements.
"Implementation of this proposed sale will not require the assignment of any additional US Government or contractor representatives to Ukraine. There will be no adverse impact on US defense readiness as a result of this proposed sale," the department concludes.
Other aid
The US State Department recently announced that Germany was preparing to transfer an additional batch of interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine. This involves 10 MIM-104E GEM-T units worth $29.6 million, which the country had previously received from the US.
On September 18, the EU allocated 3.3 billion euros to Ukraine for the purchase of missiles and drones.
