The US Air Force has decided to pause plans to test hypersonic rocket cargo deliveries. This was a joint project with Elon Musk’s company SpaceX, Reuters reports.

The Air Force promised an environmental review of the project. However, releasing the preliminary report was delayed due to opposition from environmental groups. The rockets were planned to launch from Johnston Atoll, a coral island in the Pacific Ocean that’s home to many seabirds.

A US Air Force spokesperson said they’re now exploring alternative sites. The program aims to use commercial rockets, including those made by SpaceX.

The goal is to test the landing of reusable rocket modules capable of delivering up to 100 tons of cargo anywhere on Earth in about 90 minutes. This could revolutionize military logistics by enabling rapid supply drops to remote locations.

But biologists and experts warn the island’s ecosystem might not withstand the strain - 14 species of tropical birds live there.

Trump's quarrel with Musk

In early June 2025, tensions between Donald Trump and Elon Musk went public when Musk slammed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, calling it a disgusting abomination that worsens the deficit.

Musk also floated the idea of launching a new political party, the America Party, to challenge the one-party regime in the US. This marked a sharp break from their previous alliance, as Musk had been a key player in Trump’s circle and a generous donor.

In response, Trump threatened to withdraw government contracts and perks for Musk’s companies, Tesla and SpaceX.

Recently, reports surfaced that Trump might even consider deporting Musk to South Africa.
