Ursula von der Leyen eyes second term as EU Commission President - Bild
Tomorrow morning, on February 19th, Ursula von der Leyen will announce her readiness to pursue a second term as the head of the European Commission following a discussion in the Christian Democratic Union presidium, reports Bild.
As reported by the publication, it is expected that Ursula von der Leyen will arrive in Berlin today, February 18th, after her speech at the Munich Security Conference. There, she left no doubt that she sees supporting Ukraine as her mission, especially after the death of Alexei Navalny in a Russian penal colony.
"Standing up to the Kremlin despot Putin (Vladimir Putin, - ed.) is what she now aims to do over the next five years. For several months, the mother and grandmother of seven children has dodged all questions about her future ambitions after her first term in office," the article writes.
Bild adds that if all goes smoothly, von der Leyen's candidacy could be officially confirmed on March 7th at the congress of the conservative European People's Party in Bucharest.
As was reported, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz opposed the appointment of von der Leyen as the next NATO Secretary-General.
