The United States abstained during the vote in the United Nations General Assembly on a resolution supporting lasting peace in Ukraine. This drew criticism from former special envoy of President Donald Trump, Keith Kellogg, Bloomberg reports.
How voting took place in the United Nations
The United Nations General Assembly considered a resolution that:
- Called for an immediate ceasefire;
- Affirmed the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine;
- Emphasized the importance of the Charter of the United Nations on the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion.
The document was supported by 107 countries. Twelve states voted against, including Russia, and another 51 countries abstained — among them the United States.
Kellogg criticized the decision of the United States
Former special envoy of the President of the United States for Ukraine and Russia, Keith Kellogg, reacted sharply to the position of Washington.
"A UN vote on a lasting peace in Ukraine, and we abstained. Go figure. It is not a business deal-it is war," he wrote.
Position of the United States in the United Nations
Deputy representative of the United States to the United Nations, Tammy Bruce, explained that Washington continues to work on ending war but has reservations about the wording of the document.
According to her, the text of the resolution could distract from current diplomatic negotiations instead of contributing to the search for a peaceful solution.
The vote took place against the background of active international discussions on possible diplomatic ways to end the war and attempts to coordinate approaches to future negotiations.
Scandal over the United States vote
On 24 February 2025 United Nations General Assembly supported the resolution "Advancing a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in Ukraine," initiated by Ukraine in co-authorship with more than 50 states.
The document was supported by 93 countries. Resolution contains a call on Russia to immediately and unconditionally withdraw its troops from the territory of Ukraine.
Eighteen states voted against the Ukrainian draft, including, in particular, the United States.
