The UN Security Council will meet on Monday, August 24 - Ukraine's Independence Day - to discuss the situation surrounding Russia's war against Ukraine, according to Ukrinform.
Who initiated the meeting
The discussion was initiated by five European members of the Security Council - Denmark, France, Greece, Latvia and the United Kingdom.
The meeting is expected to be chaired by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, as Denmark holds the Security Council presidency in August.
Who will brief the council
The UN will be represented at the meeting by Under-Secretaries-General for Political and Humanitarian Affairs Rosemary DiCarlo and Tom Fletcher.
When the meeting will take place
The meeting will begin at 3:00 p.m. Eastern Time, which is 10:00 p.m. Kyiv time.
The UN's role in finding ways to end the war has been raised repeatedly in recent days. The day before, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the UN would join efforts to find paths to peace in Ukraine, stressing that Russian strikes also threaten other countries.
This includes food security - Russian attacks on Odesa's ports have almost halted Ukrainian grain exports at the height of the harvest, while analysts predict that this could cause Ukraine's GDP to shrink by 2% this year. At the end of July, the UN also acknowledged that Russian attacks on ports and ships threaten food security worldwide.
