President of the UN General Assembly Annalena Baerbock does not rule out the deployment of UN peacekeeping forces in Ukraine to ensure a ceasefire and post-war peace, if supported by a majority of member states, according to Bild.

She emphasized that peacekeeping missions are "more necessary than ever, and not only with regard to the European continent."

"If a peace treaty is concluded, it must be protected as much as possible. And if the majority of member states believe that Blue Helmets are needed for this, then this will hopefully help ensure lasting peace. First of all, peace negotiations must take place," Baerbock stressed.

UN peacekeepers are servicemen of member states seconded to serve under the command and control of the United Nations. The possibility of such a mission in Ukraine largely depends on Moscow: the deployment of Blue Helmets is authorized by the UN Security Council, and Russia's veto power can block the corresponding decision.

Security guarantees for Ukraine

On August 18, a meeting took place at the White House between US President Donald Trump, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European leaders. The main topic was security guarantees for Ukraine. The allies discussed introducing a mechanism similar to NATO’s Article 5, but outside the framework of the Alliance.

During the talks, Trump confirmed US participation in such a system, while stressing that the main responsibility should fall on European partners. He also ruled out sending American troops to Ukraine.

Italy, for its part, is considering sending sappers for demining de-occupied territories and the maritime area
