UN demands Russia cease deportation of Ukrainian children
The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has called on Russia to stop forcibly removing children from Ukraine and ensure the return to their homeland of those already deported, according to the committee's report.
Experts comprising the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child have called on Russia to "put an end to the forcible displacement or deportation of children from the occupied Ukrainian territory."
They also demanded that the aggressor country provide information on the exact number of children who have been taken out of Ukraine and ensure their swift return home.
At the same time, the committee accused Russia of violating the Convention on the Rights of the Child by forcibly depriving deported children of Ukrainian citizenship.
Deportation of Ukrainian children
According to Ukraine's data, approximately 20,000 children have been forcibly removed to Russian territory since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion in February 2022.
Last year, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Russian dictator Vladimir Putin and Maria Lvova-Belova, authorized by the President of Russia for children's rights. They are suspected of involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children.
