The United Nations is concerned about Donald Trump’s victory in the US elections for several reasons, Reuters reports.

The main concern for the UN is that Trump might reduce funding for the United Nations. Additionally, Washington could withdraw from key international agreements and institutions, including the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Agreement.

If the US steps back from the UN mandate, it could open the door for China. Sources note that China might position itself as the "supporter number one of multilateralism."

Currently, the United States is the largest donor to the UN, with China in second place. Washington accounts for 22% of the UN's core budget and 27% of the peacekeeping budget.

It is also noted that President Joe Biden’s administration owes $995 million to the UN’s core budget and $862 million to the peacekeeping budget. If the US reduces its funding, essential operations would become impossible.

The UN Secretary-General António Guterres' team believes the upcoming year will be extremely challenging.

Trump wins election

On November 5, elections were held in the US, with Republican Donald Trump emerging victorious. His opponent, Kamala Harris, has already conceded. Additionally, the Republican Party secured a majority in the Senate.

Trump has already declared himself the president-elect. In his first rally after the election, he made several statements, including a promise to end all wars.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump had a phone conversation, discussing possible future cooperation between the two countries.
