If the Russian Federation violates the ceasefire in the Black Sea, Ukraine will respond, states Ukrainian Navy spokesperson Dmytro Pletenchuk during a national television broadcast.

He specifically recalled the words of Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, who stated that Russia must not leave the eastern part of the Black Sea. Otherwise, Kyiv would consider it a violation of the ceasefire.

"This has been repeatedly discussed at the highest levels of government, and, of course, the response will be appropriate. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov also reiterated that Russian forces must not leave the eastern part of the Black Sea, where they have a formal legal right to be - along their own coastline - and where they have, in fact, remained for a long time," he said.

Pletenchuk reiterated that, for Ukraine, a ceasefire in the Black Sea primarily means an end to attacks on port infrastructure. At the same time, the right to strike Russian warships remains.

“Yes, this is about security. It concerns which targets cannot be struck during a ceasefire. This, of course, applies to the stable operation of our grain corridor and maintaining export capabilities. As for military targets - as stated by representatives of Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry - the ceasefire does not extend to military assets, such as warships,” the spokesperson added.

Ukraine-Russia ceasefire

US Vice President JD Vance said yesterday that an energy ceasefire is in place between Ukraine and Russia. His remarks came after Russia carried out several attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure in recent days. He also stated that a ceasefire in the Black Sea is nearly finalized.

“We've obviously got this energy infrastructure ceasefire. We've got a Black Sea commercial ceasefire that I think is almost done,” Vance said.

According to him, further steps toward a broader ceasefire will be considered after an agreement in the Black Sea is reached.
