Ukrainian Navy spokesperson on why Russians take Kalibr carriers into Mediterranean Sea
Russians continue to deploy Kalibr missile carriers in the Mediterranean Sea. They could use this weaponry to further the genocide of Syrians, according to the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Navy, Dmytro Pletenchuk, during a televised marathon.
He reminded that Russians have a permanent operational group of the Russian Navy in the Mediterranean Sea. Russians are based there in Tartus (Syria).
"I remind you that there has been a conflict going on there for many years, where Russia is directly involved, possibly organizing it. They are also destroying the people of another country. Essentially, it's what they usually do," Pletenchuk said.
He also recalled that Russians have geopolitical interests in Africa. Russian fleet periodically visits other ports where they are still accepted.
"To say there is a specific goal. Most likely, they may use them (Kalibr missile carriers) at some point to continue the genocide of the Syrian people," added the Navy spokesman.
Events leading up
Russian military ships are regularly spotted in the Mediterranean Sea. In particular, several Kalibr missile carriers were deployed in the waters in early March. Against this backdrop, the Ukrainian Navy stressed that there is no threat to Ukraine.
Also, at the end of March, two Russian landing ships were spotted in the Mediterranean Sea near the coast of Spain. Spanish patrols were monitoring them.
