Ukrainian MFA denies FT claims: Foreign Minister did not discuss territorial concessions
Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha did not discuss territorial concessions to end the war during his participation in the UN General Assembly. The information in the Financial Times article is fake, according to the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Heorhii Tykhyi.
FT article
The Financial Times wrote that Sybiha discussed with foreign colleagues the possibility of a compromise to end the war with Russia during his visit to New York.
The journalists claimed that Sybiha was “more pragmatic” than his predecessor, Dmytro Kuleba, when discussing the matter.
Reaction from MFA
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi has already responded to such rumors.
“I attended every meeting of Foreign Minister Sybiha in New York, and there were no proposals, discussions, or even hints of any territorial compromises at any of them,” Tykhyi said.
He notes that the Foreign Minister's position is unwavering - there can be no compromises in the context of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The peace formula is the only realistic way to a just and lasting peace. And the principle of “nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine” must be respected.
“The information from the Financial Times source about the minister discussing compromises is simply untrue, and we wonder who is interested in spreading such false narratives,” Tykhyi added.
Backstory
Czech President Petr Pavel recently said that Ukraine should agree to Russia's temporary control over certain territories.
In his opinion, some Ukrainian territories will remain under occupation after the war. And this situation could last for years.
In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says that middle-ground decisions will only postpone the war, but not restore peace.
