Ukrainian Foreign Ministry expresses disappointment over Fico's statement on Nazis in Ukraine
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico's statement about the Ukrainian military contradicts the “current level of trust and cooperation” between the two countries, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.
What preceded it
On Monday, September 9, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said during a visit to the Holocaust Museum in Sered that “Nazi troops” are fighting in Ukraine, yet the international community supposedly does not notice this.
Response of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine
According to the ministry, Kyiv is disappointed with Fico's statement about Ukrainian soldiers, as it contradicts the existing level of trust and cooperation between Ukraine and Slovakia.
"Ukrainian soldiers are defending their families, homes, and country, as well as the entire Europe and the free world, from Russian invaders marked with the letter "Z" - a symbol of modern Russia's fascist aesthetics," the Ministry noted.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry reminded that for Ukrainians, resisting Russian aggression is a continuation of their historical struggle against totalitarian regimes in the last century.
"We rely on Slovakia's and all of our European partners' united efforts to counter the current Russian evil, which has brought atrocities to Ukrainian soil unprecedented since World War II," the Ministry emphasized.
Slovakia's position on Ukraine
Last fall, Robert Fico and his party, Direction – Social Democracy, came to power in Slovakia. He promised to halt military support for Ukraine and block its NATO membership, expressing pro-Russian views and referring to the war as a "frozen conflict."
Recently, Czechia canceled a joint Cabinet meeting with Slovakia due to a conflict arising from differing attitudes towards Russia and Ukraine.
