Over the past few days, the Ukrainian Defense Forces have advanced along the Sloviansk sector in the Donetsk region. The Ukrainian military has also carried out a series of successful counterattacks in other sectors of the front, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Donetsk region
Sloviansk sector. Russian sources have publicly acknowledged that the Russian army no longer controls a number of positions east of Lyman, west of Ivanivka, in the northwestern part of Zarichne, and in the northeastern part of Yampil. Previously, the Russians had claimed to be advancing or maintaining a presence in these areas.
The Ukrainian military also refutes Russian claims of alleged advances in Sviatohirsk. According to Ukrainian soldiers, Russian troops have increased the number of assaults on the Lyman sector and are amassing forces there, but are suffering casualties due to Ukrainian Armed Forces strikes.
Kostiantynivka sector. Russian troops recently advanced here and continue to attempt to penetrate the city.
Dobropillia sector. On September 7–8, the Russians carried out offensive operations but made no new territorial gains.
Pokrovsk sector. Russian troops have advanced here. Geolocated footage indicates that the Russians have likely captured Myrne, northwest of Pokrovsk, as well as nearby Vasylivka.
Novopavlivka sector. On September 7–8, the Russians carried out limited assaults but failed to break through.
Sumy region
On September 7–8, the Russian army continued offensive operations in the north of the region but was unable to advance due to counterattacks by Ukrainian forces.
In particular, Ukrainian forces launched counterattacks near Kindrativka and Novokostiantynivka, located north of Sumy.
Kharkiv region
The Kupiansk and Borova sectors. Russian forces continued their offensive on September 7–8 but failed to make further territorial gains due to counterattacks by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
According to Russian sources, Ukrainian forces also launched a counterattack near Zapadne, north of Kupiansk.
Meanwhile, sources say the Russian command is already preparing for a winter campaign and compiling lists of troops to remain in Kupiansk.
This may indicate that Russia does not expect to conclude the fighting for the city this fall.
Earlier, Ukraine's Khartiia Corps carried out a successful offensive near Kupiansk.
