The Ukrainian Defense Forces continue to hold their positions in the hottest spots of the front. Sometimes they counterattack, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Over the past 24 hours, on May 20, 112 combat engagements took place. Russian troops fired at the positions of Ukrainian defenders and civilian settlements 4064 times.

Ukrainian air force, missile troops, and artillery struck at:

  • 20 areas of concentration of Russian personnel;
  • the area of concentration of Russian military equipment;
  • a command and control center;
  • an artillery unit;
  • an ammunition depot;
  • an air defense facility.

The Ukrainian Defense Forces are focusing their efforts on the Tavria, Donetsk, and Kharkiv operational areas to disrupt Russia's plans to advance in Donetsk, Luhansk, and part of the Kharkiv regions. In particular, positions along Ukraine's state border with Russia are being strengthened.

"In the hottest areas of the front Ukrainian soldiers are holding their positions and destroying Russian troops, sometimes counterattacking," the General Staff adds.

Since the beginning of the day, 37 combat engagements have already taken place.

Russia's offensive

In recent weeks, Russia has intensified combat actions in the Kharkiv sector. Russian troops tried to break through the line of defense of the Ukrainian military but then decided to stretch the line of active combatants towards the Donetsk region.

According to Oleksandr Lytvynenko, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC), the situation at the front is not catastrophic, but difficult. According to him, Russia is trying to create a gray zone.
