Ukrainian defense forces hit Russian S-300 air defense system in Rostov region
On the night of August 21, units of the Ukrainian Navy, in coordination with other Defense Forces components, struck an S-300 anti-aircraft missile system near the town of Novoshakhtinsk in Russia's Rostov region, citing the Ukrainian General Staff.
The military confirmed that explosions were observed at the target locations, and the accuracy of the strikes is currently being further assessed.
Russian forces frequently use S-300 systems not only for air defense but also to attack civilian cities in Ukraine, leading to the destruction of residential buildings and terrorizing the civilian population.
"The joint combat operations of all components of Ukraine's Defense Forces against significant Russian military targets continue. There’s more to come," the military said.
S-300 air defense system
The S-300 is a Soviet and Russian anti-aircraft missile system widely used by many countries. During Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, this system has been employed for the air defense of Russian forces.
The S-300 is vulnerable to precision missiles, drones, and other modern weaponry. While its range is substantial, it may still be insufficient to intercept missiles launched from long distances.
Ukraine's Armed Forces destroy Russian S-300/S-400 systems
On the night of June 10, Ukrainian forces successfully destroyed an S-400 anti-aircraft missile system near Dzhankoi, along with two S-300 systems near Chornomorske and Yevpatoria.
