Ukraine wants India to moderate talks with Russia - Ambassador
Ukraine believes that India should take a more active role in ending Russia's war against Ukraine. Kyiv wants India to act as a mediator in peace negotiations, citing Ukraine's ambassador to India, Oleksandr Polischuk.
According to him, India must play a more active role in ending the war in Ukraine if it seeks a permanent seat on the UN Security Council.
The ambassador said that Ukraine wants India to "moderate" negotiations with Russia and use its connections with Moscow to help persuade Russia to join peace talks. The diplomat added that Ukraine has proposed India hold a second peace summit by November 2024, but it remains unclear whether New Delhi will agree.
Polischuk further emphasized that India should not be content with playing the role of a "postman passing messages between Ukraine and Russia," but instead take on a "more robust role."
India's stance on war
In July, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia and met with dictator Vladimir Putin. Just ahead of Ukraine’s Independence Day on August 23, Modi visited Kyiv.
He met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and made several statements regarding the war. Notably, the prime minister expressed India's willingness to play a larger role in peace negotiations. More details about Modi's visit to Ukraine can be found in RBC-Ukraine coverage.
It was also recently reported that India's National Security Advisor paid a visit to Moscow. According to media reports, he is expected to discuss peace efforts regarding Ukraine.
