Ukraine unlikely to receive Alliance invitation at future summit, U.S. envoy to NATO says
Ukraine may not be invited to become a member of the North Atlantic Alliance at the upcoming NATO summit in Washington. The event will take place on July 9-11, states the U.S. Ambassador to NATO, Julianne Smith.
"As for the summit this summer, I do not expect the alliance to issue an invitation (to Ukraine - Ed.) at this juncture," Smith said.
According to her, after the Vilnius summit in 2023, NATO allies have been diligently working to help Ukraine implement necessary reforms within the country to move closer to Euro-Atlantic integration.
"And we continue to focus first and foremost on supporting them in the current fight and ensuring that they can prevail on the battlefield," the ambassador added.
NATO summit in Washington
This year a jubilee NATO summit will take place in Washington. According to the head of the Office of President, Andriy Yermak, Ukraine expects a historic decision during the summit regarding Ukraine.
At the same time, the UK Ambassador to NATO, David Quarrey, recently stated that Ukraine should not expect significant progress in NATO membership at the summit.
