Ukraine will receive modern Tridon Mk2 air defense systems from Sweden. They will help counter Shahed drones and other aerial threats, the press service of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine reports.

Sweden will allocate 400 million euros for the purchase of the latest systems — almost a third of the new military aid package worth 1.2 billion euros announced in February.

Characteristics of Tridon Mk2 air defense

Tridon Mk2 is a mobile medium-range air defense system. It was first presented in 2024. It operates in all weather conditions, day and night. One of its advantages is a relatively low cost per shot.

The new system is capable of simultaneously countering many threats, including strike and reconnaissance drones, aircraft, helicopters, and cruise missiles.

Armament of the air defense system

Tridon Mk2 is equipped with a 40 mm automatic Bofors 40 Mk4 gun that hits targets at a distance of up to 12 km, firing up to 300 rounds per minute. The system allows reducing the rate of fire to 200 rounds per minute, which saves ammunition and adapts it to specific fire tasks.

The Tridon Mk2 gun uses programmable ammunition. They explode directly in front of the target, creating a cloud of fragments. This significantly increases effectiveness against aerial drones and cruise missiles.

Air defense carriers

The system can be mounted on tracked armored all-terrain vehicles, BvS 10 or Scania trucks. It is equipped with electric drives, which makes it easy to integrate with different platforms, unlike systems with hydraulic drives.

Earlier, Ukraine's Minister of Defense Mykhailo Fedorov reported on the deployment of short-range air defense systems RapidRanger in the country.

Additionally, Ukraine is preparing requests to the United States and Middle East countries for the transfer of THAAD air defense systems, which may become an effective method of countering guided aerial bombs.
