Ukraine is accelerating the production of automated robotic turrets equipped with artificial intelligence and machine vision. The systems have proven highly effective at shooting down jet-powered Shahed drones, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said following a coordination meeting on the situation in Ukraine after another wave of Russian attacks.
Orders for turrets increased
Zelenskyy, together with Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Mykhailo Drapatyi, and Air Force Commander Anatolii Kryvonozhko, identified additional Ukrainian capabilities for turret production.
"We set additional production capacity for turrets, which have proven highly effective against Shaheds. We are increasing orders, and it is important to accelerate every process as much as possible – organizational, financial, and production-related," the president said.
More than 12 automatic .50-caliber turrets installed in Kyiv are Ukrainian-made Sky Sentinel systems, as confirmed by Air Force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat.
In addition, Zelenskyy announced on October 4, during a briefing with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, that turrets had begun to be installed in Kyiv.
It was also reported that robotic turrets are already shooting down Russian jet-powered drones. Ukraine is working to maximize the number of interceptions.
