Countries neighboring Russia are tightening border measures due to the plague outbreak. Kyiv is also closely monitoring the situation and has assessed whether it poses a threat to Ukraine, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said at a briefing.

According to him, the relevant Ukrainian authorities and the healthcare system are closely monitoring the situation in Russia. As of now, no threats to Ukraine have been identified.

At the same time, Kyiv is paying attention to the response of countries neighboring Russia. They are tightening measures at their borders due to the situation.

Tykhyi also said that the Russian authorities are repeating Soviet practices of concealing information. In his view, Moscow is unable to provide an adequate level of protection against epidemics.

The US Embassy in Moscow has issued an official warning over a suspected case of pneumonic plague in the Irkutsk region.

Americans are being advised to leave Russia, while the diplomatic mission acknowledges that its ability to assist them in the country is limited.

The US has also sent Russia a diplomatic note over the death of an employee at a plague laboratory in Siberia.

Washington is demanding additional information because Moscow has disclosed very few details.
