Ukraine’s UN Permanent Representative slams Security Council over Russia’s 'genocide'

Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN, Andrii Melnyk, stated that the Security Council's failure to counter Russia's genocidal actions is a disgrace. He called on partners to transfer all available Patriot missiles to Kyiv, according to a broadcast of the Security Council meeting.
"What a disgrace that to this day the UN Security Council has failed to take effective action to hold Russia to account and to prevent a daily genocide of the Ukrainian people carried out in plain sight of the world," Melnyk said.
The diplomat noted that the Russian Federation had deliberately launched a campaign of ballistic terror against Ukraine, as the country is facing a shortage of air defense missiles.
"Knowing that Ukraine is facing critical shortages of air defense interceptors, Putin has unleashed the most cynical and the most brutal campaign of ballistic terror in modern human history, deliberately targeting ordinary people across Ukraine," he said.
Commenting on the situation, Melnyk called it the most horrific and abhorrent theater of the absurd in history. He explained this by noting that Ukraine is a European country, yet before the eyes of the entire international community, it is under enemy drone and ballistic attack every day and night.
"And all that the world community seems capable of doing is to convene a meeting of the UN Security Council and at best condemn Russia's war crimes and crimes against humanity being committed on a staggering scale," the Permanent Representative emphasized.
He explained that even the harshest words condemning Russia's actions will not stop the force of ballistic missiles. In this context, Melnyk called for decisive action, namely:
- Imposing the "most painful and far-reaching sanctions" against Russia, primarily targeting enterprises that produce deadly weapons;
- Putting an end to Russia's abuse of the veto power, which allows it to evade accountability;
- Transferring to Kyiv all available interceptors held by partner countries.
At the same time, Melnyk stated that Ukraine is initiating the creation of a global coalition to ramp up the production of such missiles over the next ten years or more.
Concluding, he added that this would not only help save the lives of Ukrainian citizens today but would also be an important step for deterring and preventing future missile attacks.
Defense and negotiations
On August 24, Ukraine's Independence Day, a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing took place in Kyiv. As a result, Ukraine was provided with military and economic support packages.
The US, during the UN Security Council meeting, called on Russia and Ukraine to halt strikes and return to the negotiating table.
