Ukraine and the United States are intensifying cooperation in the humanitarian sphere, particularly on issues related to the release of Ukrainians from Russian captivity, according to a statement by Ukraine’s Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council (RNBO), Rustem Umerov, following talks in the United States, as well as remarks by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Priorities of talks in the US
During his visit to the United States, Umerov held a meeting with US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The key topic of the discussion was the humanitarian track.
"The main focus was on humanitarian issues, particularly the return of our prisoners held by Russia. This remains one of Ukraine’s key priorities," Umerov noted.
In addition, the sides discussed the need to intensify the diplomatic process.
In particular, they addressed coordination of further steps toward achieving a dignified peace. Following the meeting, the RNBO Secretary already briefed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Zelenskyy’s reaction
The head of state confirmed receiving a report from the Defense Minister. Zelenskyy emphasized that such meetings are aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s position.
"It was substantive. We expect it will help strengthen our positions. And humanitarian issues — they must be resolved, people must be released from captivity. This is very important," the president stressed.
Umerov’s visit to the US
Ahead of the Ukrainian delegation’s visit to Washington, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy gave Rustem Umerov three specific tasks for discussions with the American side.
The main priorities included coordination of steps toward a just peace, strengthening defense support, and addressing humanitarian issues, including the release of prisoners.
At the same time, Ukraine is preparing for the next stage of diplomatic communication. As the president stated, Kyiv expects a visit from representatives of Donald Trump at the turn of spring and summer 2026 for detailed discussions on further cooperation.
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized Washington’s position on the peace process. According to him, the United States is ready to act as a mediator but "does not want to waste time" on efforts that do not bring real results in ending the war.
