Ukraine’s real security guarantee is Armed Forces - Zelenskyy
Today, on December 6, Ukraine celebrates Armed Forces Day. It is Ukrainian servicemen who have become the first and true guarantor of the security of our country, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says.
According to the President, there are 2 dates in Ukrainian history that are side by side on the calendar, but have different flavors and two different wisdoms that have been learned by our people - the signing of the Budapest Memorandum, December 5, and the Day of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, December 6.
“Today, we understand for sure that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are the real, first, most effective, most reliable guarantor of our security,” he adds.
Budapest Memorandum
The Budapest Memorandum is an international agreement signed by Ukraine, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and Russia on December 5, 1994. According to the agreement, Kyiv gave up nuclear weapons in exchange for alleged guarantees of the territorial integrity, sovereignty, and security of Ukraine.
As noted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Kyiv rejected any alternative to joining NATO after the Budapest Memorandum, which was a bitter experience for the country.
According to Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Presidential Office, the memorandum was one of the most remarkable stories of lies in history, as all the parties who signed it understood that the agreement would not work.
