Ukraine’s population has declined to 28.5 million due to citizens leaving the country. The situation has been exacerbated by migration in recent years, Ella Libanova, Director of the Institute for Demography and Life Quality Research, said.
According to Libanova, Ukraine has lost 2 million people in recent years. The main reason for this drop was people moving abroad, not war-related deaths.
"Thank God, this is due not so much to deaths as to people leaving the country. Why do I say 'thank God'? Because, one way or another, these people are alive," she said.
The demographer stressed that citizens who have left the country still have the potential to return home.
Even if they do not return, they will remain Ukrainians, unlike those who have died and can no longer be brought back.
It is worth noting that international partners continue to support Ukrainian citizens who were forced to leave the country because of the full-scale war.
In particular, the United States extended protection for Ukrainians at the last minute before it was due to expire.
It was also reported earlier that Germany extended temporary protection for Ukrainians until 2028.
