The detention of the Russian tanker Marinera by the Americans demonstrates the leadership of US President Donald Trump. Russia must be confronted, not feared, states Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, according to the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry’s Telegram channel.
"The detention of a vessel flying the Russian flag in the North Atlantic underscores the decisive leadership of the United States and President Trump. We welcome this approach in relations with Russia: to act, not to fear," Sybiha said.
He added that this approach should also be applied to the peace process in order to bring a lasting peace between Ukraine and Russia closer.
Detention of the Marinera tanker
Today, January 7, the US Coast Guard detained the Russian-flagged tanker Marinera. The incident occurred between Iceland and the British Isles.
US servicemembers had been tracking the tanker for several days. The operation was conducted with the participation of the UK. According to UK Defence Secretary John Healey, the vessel was heading to Russia.
As explained by the US European Command, the detention was due to violations of the US sanctions regime.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the crew is "subject to prosecution" for violating US law.
In Russia, officials complained that the US allegedly violated international law and described the incident as "piracy."
Meanwhile, Russian lawmaker and first deputy chairman of the Defense Committee, Alexei Zhuravlyov, even called for a military response against the US, urging torpedo strikes on American ships.
