As a result, Rybakina comfortably took the first set 6–1. In the second set, Kostyuk managed to play three games, but at 1–2, she decided to retire. The Ukrainian left the court in tears. The match lasted only 53 minutes.
This was the fourth career meeting between the two players. The head-to-head now stands at 3–1 in favor of Rybakina.
Kostyuk at the Montreal WTA 1000
Despite the disappointing ending, the tournament marked a milestone for Kostyuk. It was her first time reaching the quarterfinals of the Canadian WTA 1000. On her way to the last eight, she defeated Czech Marketa Vondrousova, Daria Kasatkina of Australia, and American McCartney Kessler, ending a six-match losing streak.
It is currently unknown whether Kostyuk will need time off from competition. Her continued participation in the summer tour will depend on the results of a medical examination.
This leaves Elina Svitolina as the only remaining Ukrainian at the WTA 1000 tournament in Montreal. During the night of August 6, Kyiv time, she will play her quarterfinal match against Japan's Naomi Osaka.
