Cyber specialists of Ukraine’s military intelligence have attacked the online system of Russian Railways. The official website of Russian Railways (RZD) is currently down, according to RBC-Ukraine sources.

According to sources in the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, the non-standard cyberattack disrupted the functionality of the rzd.ru system.

The operation specifically caused a failure of the NS servers responsible for domain name resolution on the network. As a result, domain names under rzd.ru (including all subdomains) can no longer be converted into IP addresses, effectively disabling all services on rzd.ru, including mobile applications.

The very fact of the cyberattack on the infrastructure was acknowledged by Russian Railways. According to a statement from its press service, the attack reached a capacity of 6 GB and nearly 2.5 million packets per second.

As a result, Russian users have effectively lost access to all Russian Railways services.

In summer 2024, the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) carried out a large-scale cyberattack on Russia’s financial sector. The attack lasted a week, targeting Russian banks and government resources.

Also, on January 4, the birthday of HUR chief Kyrylo Budanov, the Ukrainian intelligence cyber group struck the Russian company RegionTransService, which supports the operation of the Russian railways.
