Cyber specialists from the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine have attacked the Russian company RegionTransService, which operates the Russian railway system, RBC-Ukraine's sources inform.

According to sources, the operation was carried out on the birthday of Kyrylo Budanov, the head of the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate (HUR).

RegionTransService LLC is a leading service company for the maintenance of freight wagons, which also supports the operations of the Russian occupation army.

Sources report that on January 4, as a result of the cyberattack, all of the company's servers were destroyed, workstations were disabled, and backups were wiped. In total, 78 servers and 211 workstations were affected.

RegionTransService provides a full range of services at all stages of a wagon's lifecycle, from receiving new wagons at the manufacturer’s factory and registering them with the railway, to carrying out all maintenance regulations and the disposal of wagons. This company is one of the key entities supporting the operations of Russian Railways (RZD) and, consequently, the transportation of military cargoes for Russia’s military actions against Ukraine.

Other cyberattacks by HUR

Recall that in the summer of 2024, HUR launched a large-scale cyberattack on Russia's financial sector. The attack lasted for a week, targeting Russian banks and government resources.

Recently, cyber specialists from the Ukrainian Military Intelligence Directorate also attacked services in Russia's oil sector. The main target was the resources of the oil company Lukoil, which plays an active role in supporting Russia’s occupying forces.
