Ukraine's Foreign Ministry assesses impact of US 'bone-crushing' sanctions on Russia

The adoption of the US sanctions bill will help deter Russia, compel it to make peace, and trigger a chain reaction among other countries worldwide, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi said during a briefing.
According to Tykhyi, the team of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Foreign Ministry and Ukraine’s embassy in the United States are currently working very actively to ensure that this document is adopted.
He noted that there is an internal political debate surrounding the bill in the US and the document has its nuances, but increasing pressure on Russia is an urgent and critically important matter.
"This is something Ukraine genuinely needs to deter the aggressor. It is also necessary to compel Moscow toward peace. In our view, the adoption of this bill and its subsequent signing by the US president will help bring peace closer. That is the most important thing," Tykhyi said.
Impact on other countries
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also emphasized that Ukraine anticipates the upcoming vote and the subsequent progress of the document until its implementation. According to the diplomat, it could encourage Ukraine’s partners to take similar steps.
"It will also affect sanctions imposed by other countries. That is, it will definitely stimulate the rest of the international community to increase pressure on the aggressor. That is exactly what we need," Tykhyi said.
In August, the US Senate approved a bill introduced by the late Sen. Lindsey Graham that would impose tough sanctions on Russia and Iran. The legislation was supported by 86 senators, while 11 voted against it.
The bill would, among other measures, impose tariffs of up to 100% on major buyers of Russian energy, as well as sanctions targeting Russia’s leadership, banks, energy projects and shadow fleet. It also includes provisions for tariffs of up to 500% on direct imports from Russia.
