Ukraine's Foreign Ministry assesses chance of Zelenskyy-Trump meeting in New York

Ukraine received a signal from US Secretary of State Marco Rubio regarding a possible meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and US leader Donald Trump. The Foreign Ministry is working on organizing such a meeting, stated the spokesperson of the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Heorhii Tykhyi, during a briefing.
Tykhyi noted that the signal from the US Secretary of State was seen in Kyiv and welcomed as a positive sign toward holding a meeting.
"We understand that during the high-level segment of the UN, opportunities for such contacts usually arise. And we would be glad if it were possible to organize a meeting in New York between our leaders," he said.
Tykhyi added that work on meetings and contacts between the presidents of Ukraine and the US is ongoing, so the ministry saw nothing surprising in Rubio’s statement. Kyiv uses every opportunity to arrange such meetings.
"If it is possible to organize a meeting in New York, it will be an important opportunity to discuss the full agenda, bilateral relations, and other key decisions. That is why we are working to make this meeting happen and want it to happen," the Foreign Ministry spokesperson added.
However, Tykhyi noted that the Ukrainian President will have a very busy schedule in New York. Zelenskyy will meet not only with Trump but also with other partners of Ukraine, including those from the US side.
The US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on September 16 that Trump is likely to meet with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy next week on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York.
