Ukraine's EU accession. European Commission sets deadline for negotiating framework
The European Commission will present a negotiating framework for EU accession talks with Ukraine in March this year, states the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
According to Ursula von der Leyen, EU membership would be the best step to strengthen Ukraine's security.
"We have already started the screening process, there is a lot of work and a long schedule. I encourage you to fulfill the recommendations of the European Commission. And for our part, the European Commission will provide a general framework for negotiations in mid-March," she emphasized.
Negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU
In December, at a summit in Brussels, EU leaders approved the start of negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU.
In fact, negotiations on Ukraine's accession to the EU have not yet begun, as Ukrainian legislation is still being screened for compliance with EU requirements and a negotiating framework is being developed.
The negotiating framework is a technical assignment that covers various aspects of future negotiations on EU membership with a candidate country:
- stages of negotiations,
- opening of negotiating chapters, which chapters are opened first, which are closed last,
- how progress is assessed, negotiating chapters are closed, etc.
EU Ambassador to Ukraine Katarina Mathernova also said that the negotiations could start in the spring.
